HIV & PrEP FAQs

Answers from the experts at Freddie

What is HIV?
  • HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) is a virus that attacks the immune system and lowers the body’s natural defence against illness and disease.
  • HIV can be managed with effective treatment, but right now there isn't a cure.
  • HIV can be transmitted when one person's body fluids enter another person's bloodstream. It is most commonly transmitted through condomless sex and sharing injections.
Who should get an HIV test?
  • You should consider having an HIV test done if you recently engaged in activity that could transmit HIV — such as sharing needles or having condomless sex — and you don't know the other person's STI status.
  • Getting tested with Freddie is 100% free.
What kind of testing does Freddie do?
  • As part of the process of starting PrEP, you'll complete some lab tests that screen for HIV and other STIs. The goal of these tests is to ensure that PrEP is safe and effective for you.
  • A blood test is required to check for HIV, along with a urine test to check for other STIs.
  • We can help find a lab near you to make getting tests done fast and easy. At-home lab testing is available in Calgary.
What are the possible side effects of PrEP?
  • A small number of people may have some nausea or upset stomach when they start PrEP, but this usually clears up in a few weeks.
  • In the longer term, some types of PrEP have a low risk of reducing your kidney function or bone density. This is usually reversed by stopping PrEP or switching to a different form of PrEP.
  • There are a few different types of PrEP, which mostly vary in cost and in their side effect profiles.
Can women and trans people take PrEP?
  • PrEP isn’t just for cisgender men. Anyone of any gender can take PrEP to help prevent HIV.
  • If your sex partners were born with a penis and any of their other partners were born a penis, then you could be a good fit for PrEP.
  • You might also benefit if you inject drugs or belong to a community with high HIV rates.
I’ve heard PrEP medications are expensive. What will I pay for PrEP?
  • PrEP can be expensive — but over 90% of Freddie patients pay $0 for PrEP.
  • Most people have coverage through their private health insurance plan. If you have an amount to pay after this is applied, our financial assistance program will usually cover the rest. For the small number of people who aren’t completely covered, the amount they pay is reduced. No matter your situation, we’ll work with you to find the best way to get you protected against HIV.

Does Freddie offer DoxyPEP?
  • DoxyPEP is short for doxycycline post-exposure prophylaxis. It’s where you take an antibiotic after condomless sex to help prevent bacterial STIs. It doesn’t eliminate your risk, but it can help lower it.
  • Freddie only offers DoxyPEP to PrEP or HIV+ Care patients to ensure quality care. If you’re a good fit for one, you’re probably a good fit for the other. And we can monitor your health more effectively if both your medications are coming from one place.
  • DoxyPEP does not help prevent HIV and is NOT a replacement for PrEP.

The team is so inclusive, and easy to work with. Everything from the over the phone consult, blood work and then delivery of PrEP to my front door was easy. I have recommended so many friends to use Freddie and I would tell anyone to at least have a conversation with a clinician and see if PrEP can work for you and your lifestyle.

Better than my family doctor, they follow up every 6 months, and they also give you info how to get PrEP fully covered when you only have 70% coverage in health benefits! They also tell you every bit of info on the medication, seriously I wish every health network was like this.

Great service to get PrEP on a discount! The NPs are fabulous, and very supportive, the whole process is super easy! I've been a patient for a year now, and the system they use reminds you when you're getting close to a refill, so you don't have to worry about forgetting! They send you the form, you do your labs, and then a few days later the meds arrive in the mail.
