HIVÂ &Â PrEPÂ FAQs

Answers from the experts at Freddie
- HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) is a virus that attacks the immune system and lowers the bodyâs natural defence against illness and disease. HIV is a lifelong condition.
- HIV can be managed with effective treatment, but right now there isn't a cure.
- HIV can be transmitted when one person's body fluids enter another person's bloodstream. It is most commonly transmitted through condomless sex and sharing injections.
- You should consider having an HIVÂ test done if you recently engaged in activity that could transmit HIVÂ â such as sharing needles or having condomless sex â and you don't know the other person's STI status.
- Getting tested with Freddie is 100% free.
- As part of the process of starting PrEP, you'll complete an at-home lab kit that screens for HIVÂ and other STIs. The goal of these tests is to ensure that PrEP is safe and effective for you.
- A blood test is required to check for HIV, along with a urine test to check for other STIs.
- Once you complete your test kit, arrange a pick up or ship it back â we'll follow up with the results in a few days.
- A small number of people may have some nausea or upset stomach when they start PrEP, but this usually clears up in a few weeks.
- In the longer term, some types of PrEP have a low risk of reducing your kidney function or bone density. This is usually reversed by stopping PrEP or switching to a different form of PrEP.
- There are a few different types of PrEP, which mostly vary in cost and in their side effect profiles.

- PrEP isnât just for cisgender men. Anyone of any gender can take PrEP to help prevent HIV.
- If your sex partners were born with a penis and any of their other partners were born a penis, then you could be a good fit for PrEP.
- You might also benefit if you inject drugs or belong to a community with high HIV rates.

- DoxyPEP is short for doxycycline post-exposure prophylaxis. Itâs where you take an antibiotic after condomless sex to help prevent bacterial STIs. It doesnât eliminate your risk, but it can help lower it.
- Freddie only offers DoxyPEP to PrEP or HIV+ Care patients to ensure quality care. If youâre a good fit for one, youâre probably a good fit for the other. And we can monitor your health more effectively if both your medications are coming from one place.
- DoxyPEP does not help prevent HIV and is NOT a replacement for PrEP.
