I was previously prescribed medication for HIV, but am not currently taking any.

If you're living with HIV but not currently taking medication, you're not alone and it's never too late to restart care. Freddie is here to help.

Effective HIV treatment reduces the viral load of HIV in your body to undetectable levels. When HIV is undetectable, it's also untransmittable — meaning you can't pass it to someone else. Getting to undetectable is one of the best things you can do to reduce the risk of HIV-related complications.

The team is so inclusive, and easy to work with. Everything from the over the phone consult, blood work and then delivery of PrEP to my front door was easy. I have recommended so many friends to use Freddie and I would tell anyone to at least have a conversation with a clinician and see if PrEP can work for you and your lifestyle.

Better than my family doctor, they follow up every 6 months, and they also give you info how to get PrEP fully covered when you only have 70% coverage in health benefits! They also tell you every bit of info on the medication, seriously I wish every health network was like this.

Great service to get PrEP on a discount! The NPs are fabulous, and very supportive, the whole process is super easy! I've been a patient for a year now, and the system they use reminds you when you're getting close to a refill, so you don't have to worry about forgetting! They send you the form, you do your labs, and then a few days later the meds arrive in the mail.

Frequently asked questions

Who is eligible for Freddie HIV Care?

Freddie provides care virtually, so we want to make sure our care model is the right fit for you as a patient. Because of this, there are a few things that indicate in-person care is more suitable for you. While we strive to serve as many patients as possible, virtual care may not be a good fit for you if:

• You are under 18 years of age

• Your CD4 count is less than 200 and not currently on HIV treatment

• You are or have a chance of being pregnant

How much does Freddie HIV Care cost?

Online appointments and prescription delivery are free with Freddie and our partner pharmacies, who will deliver to your home.

If you’re prescribed medication, the final cost paid — if any — is determined primarily by your insurance coverage. Most Freddie patients with commercial insurance pay $0 out of pocket.

As part of Freddie HIV Care, you’ll need to complete some tests at a lab near you. Lab services are often available for $0, but this is dependent on your coverage and location.

We will always work to find options with the lowest cost to you.

What are the wait times for Freddie HIV Care?

We strive to have accessible care by having appointment availability within the same week for patients looking to start HIV Care with Freddie.

What does Freddie HIV Care’s treatment plan include?

Our expert clinicians tailor a treatment plan to your individual needs. In addition to determining the right medication, HIV+ Care includes regular check-ins, ongoing lab testing, and counseling and support for questions or concerns along the way to make your care easy, accessible, and judgement-free.

What other treatments are available from Freddie?

Our program focuses on expert HIV care, including treatments that support your overall health while living with HIV.

As part of your care, we commonly provide STI testing and treatment, DoxyPEP when appropriate to help prevent certain bacterial STIs, recommended vaccinations, preventive medications when needed, and heart health screening such as cholesterol checks and statin therapy when appropriate. These are standard parts of HIV care that help protect long-term health.

If you’re at risk of running out of important prescriptions while connecting with a primary care provider, we may offer short-term renewals when it’s safe to do so.

We can diagnose and treat hepatitis C when appropriate, or coordinate referral if specialist care is needed. For hepatitis B, we work alongside specialists while continuing to manage your HIV care.

If you’re unsure whether something falls within our scope, the best next step is simply to book a visit and ask your clinician. We’re happy to talk through your needs and guide you to the right care.

Lab work and testing

How much does lab work cost?

Most patients with private insurance pay $0 out of pocket for lab testing. The exact costs of labs will depend on your insurance plan and whether your out of pocket maximum has been met for the year. Freddie will partner with you to ensure your lab requisition is sent to the lab provider that is covered under your insurance plan to ensure the best coverage for any out of pocket costs.

What does lab work test for?

Besides your viral load, we may check things like kidney and liver function, cholesterol, immune health, and screen for infections like STIs or hepatitis to support your overall health.

How often do I need to complete lab work?

You’ll need to complete lab work to start care with Freddie.

If we start or change a medication, we may repeat labs about 6 weeks later just to confirm everything is going smoothly. After that, most people complete labs every 3–6 months.

How can I see my lab results?

Your lab results are always available to you directly from the labs you completed your in person testing at. If you’re unable to access them from your testing location, you can reach out to our patient care team to request a copy of the results your clinician received.
