FAQs about HIV+ Care
Have even more questions? Find answers about Freddie’s virtual HIV+ Care.
Freddie provides care virtually, so we want to make sure our care model is the right fit for you as a patient. Because of this, there are a few things that indicate in-person care is more suitable for you. While we strive to serve as many patients as possible, virtual care may not be a good fit for you if:
• You are under 18 years of age
• Your CD4 count is less than 200 and not currently on HIV treatment
• You are or have a chance of being pregnant
There is no cost to receive HIV+ care through Freddie, and most required medications are covered for those that have public health insurance within their province of residence.
Freddie’s virtual HIV+ Care program is currently available to residents of Ontario and Saskatchewan.
No! Freddie’s virtual HIV+ Care program is for anyone living with HIV, no matter your gender, sexuality or body type. Our skilled clinicians can provide care for the entire HIV community.
At Freddie, our clinicians specialize in providing quality, affirming care for HIV prevention and treatment.
We take care of everything to make sure accessing care is easy and convenient for you — from reminding you when your next lab visit should be, to ensuring you never run out of your prescription.
No more line ups at the clinic just to get a lab requisition or review your results, Freddie’s HIV+ Care program handles that virtually for you.
Our clinicians are here to support you. While not all patients may be eligible for virtual care, if you’re a match you’ll be able to book an appointment and will be issued a lab requisition right away for any additional blood work that’s required. This allows our Freddie clinicians to get you started on treatment as soon as possible.
We strive to have accessible care by having appointment availability within the same week for patients looking to start HIV+ Care with Freddie. However, we encourage you to attend your labs and complete blood work as soon as possible to prevent any delays in your treatment.
Our expert clinicians tailor a treatment plan to your individual needs. In addition to determining the right medication, HIV+ Care includes regular check-ins, ongoing lab testing, and counseling and support for questions or concerns along the way to make your care easy, accessible, and judgement-free.
Our program focuses on expert HIV care, including treatments that support your overall health while living with HIV.
As part of your care, we commonly provide STI testing and treatment, DoxyPEP when appropriate to help prevent certain bacterial STIs, recommended vaccinations, preventive medications when needed, and heart health screening such as cholesterol checks and statin therapy when appropriate. These are standard parts of HIV care that help protect long-term health.
If you’re at risk of running out of important prescriptions while connecting with a primary care provider, we may offer short-term renewals when it’s safe to do so.
We can diagnose and treat hepatitis C when appropriate, or coordinate referral if specialist care is needed. For hepatitis B, we work alongside specialists while continuing to manage your HIV care.
If you’re unsure whether something falls within our scope, the best next step is simply to book a visit and ask your clinician. We’re happy to talk through your needs and guide you to the right care.
Lab testing is a routine part of HIV care and helps us make sure your treatment is working and your medications remain safe.
You’ll do baseline labs when you first start care. If you’re already stable on treatment, you usually won’t need extra early testing.
If we start or change a medication, we may repeat labs about 6 weeks later just to confirm everything is going smoothly. After that, most people complete labs every 3–6 months.
Besides your viral load, we may check things like kidney and liver function, cholesterol, immune health, and screen for infections like STIs or hepatitis to support your overall health.
Your clinician will personalize what testing you need and explain everything along the way. If you’re ever unsure, just book an appointment and ask, we’re always happy to talk it through with you.
Your lab results are always available to you directly from the labs you completed your in person testing at. If you’re unable to access them from your testing location, you can reach out to our patient care team to request a copy of the results your clinician received.
As part of care with Freddie, you’ll be requested to complete lab testing in person via an in-person lab provider. Most patients with private insurance pay $0 out of pocket for lab testing. The exact costs of labs will depend on your insurance plan and whether your out of pocket maximum has been met for the year. Freddie will partner with you to ensure your lab requisition is sent to the lab provider that is covered under your insurance plan to ensure the best coverage for any out of pocket costs.
Here at Freddie, your care is provided by a team of clinicians. That means you might meet with or message different clinicians at different times, but you can trust that they are all equally equipped and specialized in providing you high quality care for your HIV treatment. This also ensures that your care can be provided as quickly as possible, without any delays. For your virtual appointments, if you would prefer to meet with a specific clinician, please reach out to our team to support you.
