The need-to-knows about HIV

HIV isn't a thing of the past. In fact, HIV cases in Canada are actually on the rise.*

You might think you're not at risk because of who you sleep with. The truth is that "straight" sex and male-to-male sex make up nearly the same number of new HIV cases.*

While modern treatments can greatly reduce the complications caused by HIV, once you have it, you have it for life.

There's a simple way to help protect yourself against HIV. It's a pill called PrEP.

What is PrEP?

PrEP (short for pre-exposure prophylaxis) is a medication that helps prevent HIV when taken as prescribed by a clinician.

It's typically prescribed daily for maximum protection, but it can also be prescribed to be taken around infrequent, planned sexual encounters (known as PrEP on-demand).

FAQs about PrEP

How does PrEP work?

PrEP is short for pre-exposure prophylaxis. PrEP is a medication that helps prevent HIV. It's most effective when taken as prescribed by a clinician.

If you take PrEP daily, the presence of the medicine in your bloodstream helps stop HIV from taking hold and spreading in your body. PrEP can stop HIV in your bloodstream from replicating by working to eliminate the virus from your body when the original exposure amount dies.

Is PrEP right for me?

PrEP is recommended for persons with the highest risk of HIV infection, including (but not limited to):
‍

  • Men who have sex with men and transgender women

  • Heterosexual men and women who have high-risk exposure (such as having a partner with known HIV infection, sex workers, or having sex with a person at high risk for HIV)

  • People who inject drugs

Will my insurance plan cover PrEP?

90% of Freddie patients get free PrEP. If you have questions about how much you'll pay for PrEP, please contact us.‍‍

Can I get PrEP without my parents knowing?

Yes, getting a PrEP prescription in Canada is possible without your parents knowing.

Because each patient’s case is unique, we recommend booking a free virtual appointment to receive a customized answer.

Our consultations are 100% free and confidential. The consultation will not be charged to you or your parents’ insurance.‍‍

Can PrEP help protect against other STIs?

While PrEP can help prevent HIV when taken as recommended by a clinician, it doesn't protect against any other STIs.

A different medication, DoxyPEP, may help protect against 3 other common STIs. DoxyPEP is currently only recommended for men who have sex with men, trans women and other gender-diverse people born with a penis.

You can speak to a Freddie clinician to learn more about DoxyPEP. Freddie currently only prescribes DoxyPEP to patients who also receive PrEP from Freddie.‍‍

Where is Freddie available?

Freddie is a Canadian healthcare provider that currently serves residents of Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario and Saskatchewan.
