What is PrEP?
PrEP (short for pre-exposure prophylaxis) is a medication that helps prevent HIVÂ when taken as prescribed by a clinician.
It's typically prescribed daily for maximum protection, but it can also be prescribed to be taken around infrequent, planned sexual encounters (known as PrEPÂ on-demand).

If you take PrEP daily, the presence of the medicine in your bloodstream helps stop HIV from taking hold and spreading in your body. PrEP can stop HIV in your bloodstream from replicating by working to eliminate the virus from your body when the original exposure amount dies.
PrEP is recommended for persons with the highest risk of HIV infection, including (but not limited to):

Heterosexual men and women who have high-risk exposure (such as having a partner with known HIV infection, sex workers, or having sex with a person at high risk for HIV)
