HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) is a virus that attacks the immune system and lowers the body’s natural defence against illness and disease.
HIV is a lifelong condition. It can be managed with effective treatment, but right now there isn't a cure.
There is a risk of HIV being transmitted only when one of the following fluids enters the bloodstream of somebody else. This can be through broken skin (e.g. injecting drugs, cuts or sores) or a mucous membrane (in the rectum, vagina, and penis):
Blood
Anal fluids
Vaginal fluids
Breastmilk / Chestmilk
Semen / Pre-cum
Transmission can occur through: broken skin, penis opening, vagina, rectum, and foreskin.
There is no cost of care to receive HIV treatment through Freddie, and most required medications are covered for those that have public health insurance within their province of residence.
While we strive to serve as many patients as possible, virtual care may not be a good fit for you if:
If you are under 18 years of age
If your CD4 count is less than 200 and not currently on treatment
If you have untreated tuberculosis or active cancer
If you are or have a chance of being pregnant
HIV treatment through Freddie is currently available in the provinces of Ontario and Saskatchewan, but we hope to expand this very soon
