Are you located in Toronto and looking to find a prescription for PrEP, but donât know where to go? Donât worry, we have you covered. The process is pretty similar across most of Ontario &Â Canada. Hereâs everything you need to know about where to find PrEP in Toronto.
If this is your first time on PrEP or itâs been a while and you need a refresher, the prescription process in Toronto will require you to:
1. Speak to a clinician. A visit will help you determine if PrEP is right for you. The clinician will ask about your sexual activity, drug use, and any other behaviour that can put you at higher risk for HIV. These medical professionals will also instruct you on the required tests before you collect your prescription and answer any questions you may have
2. Get some lab work done. Initial lab work tests your HIV status, STIs, and kidney function to ensure youâre suitable to start taking PrEP. Assuming the results from the tests come back as expected, you can then receive a PrEP prescription for 30 daysâ
3. Repeat lab work after 1 month and then every 3 months. This is done to ensure your body is handling PrEP well, continues to remain HIV negative, and that any STIs are detected and treated early on
PrEP for HIV is short for pre-exposure prophylaxis. It is a once-per-day HIV prevention pill that reduces the risk of contracting HIV by up to 99% for those who are HIV negative and at higher risk for HIV
This pill currently comes in three forms (all equal levels of protection when taken daily): Truvada, Generic Truvada, & Descovy.
If you take PrEP daily, the presence of the medicine in your bloodstream helps stop HIV from taking hold and spreading in your body.
The cost of PrEP varies based on your region or territory of residence. In several provinces, the government pays for PrEP for those who are medically eligible.
In others, the cost of PrEP may be only partly subsidized based on your age, income, and location.
Fortunately, Freddie provides financial support for PrEP through our Compassionate Care and Bridging programs in order to expand PrEP access in Canada!
The following clinics in Toronto are those that can directly prescribe PrEP rather than sending you to another location with a referral. Most clinics in Toronto can only offer a referral, so these are the ones that will save you the most time in obtaining your PrEP prescription:Â
