Got PrEP questions?

Our team has the answers
- PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) is a medication strategy for helping to prevent HIV.
- The medication can be a pill taken by mouth or an injection.
- When taken as prescribed, it can effectively reduce the risk of getting HIV through sex.

Long-acting PrEP is an injection administered every 2 months by a clinician that provides continuous protection from HIV without having to take a pill everyday.
We’ll work with you to figure it out. You’ll start by filling out a quick assessment which your clinician will review and discuss with you. We’ll also consider your lifestyle, insurance coverage, and financial circumstances before making a final decision together.
We manage most of the insurance process for you. Our team will verify your coverage and explore programs to help you get PrEP for as little as $0, so you don’t have to spend hours on the phone.
Apretude, the currently approved injectable PrEP, starts with one injection, followed by a second injection one month later — known as a loading dose. After that, you'll get an injection every 2 months to stay protected.
- A small number of people may have some nausea or upset stomach when they start PrEP, but this usually clears up in a few weeks.
- In the longer term, some types of PrEP have a low risk of reducing your kidney function or bone density. This is usually reversed by stopping PrEP or switching to a different form of PrEP.
- There are a few different types of PrEP, which mostly vary in cost and in their side effect profiles.
- Patients on long-acting PrEP may experience pain and swelling around the injection site.

- PrEP isn’t just for cisgender men. Anyone of any gender can take PrEP to help prevent HIV.
- If your sex partners were born with a penis and any of their other partners were born a penis, then you could be a good fit for PrEP.
- You might also benefit if you inject drugs or belong to a community with high HIV rates.

- DoxyPEP is short for doxycycline post-exposure prophylaxis. It’s where you take an antibiotic after condomless sex to help prevent bacterial STIs. It doesn’t eliminate your risk, but it can help lower it.
- Freddie only offers DoxyPEP to PrEP or HIV+ Care patients to ensure quality care. If you’re a good fit for one, you’re probably a good fit for the other. And we can monitor your health more effectively if both your medications are coming from one place.
- DoxyPEP does not help prevent HIV and is NOT a replacement for PrEP.

Freddie is a Canadian healthcare company and currently serves Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario and Saskatchewan.
